Description of Classes

Vinyassa Yoga (with Alyssa Pfennig on Wednesday and Gaynell Colllier-Magar on Thursday)
Take your body to your edge of strength, balance and flexibility through an energizing and invigorating Vinyasa Yoga class. Synchronize breath with movement to build endurance,
strengthen and stretch muscles while focusing on proper alignment and deep breathing. Open to all levels. Bring a yoga mat and a smile.
Sunset Yoga (With Julie Gries)
Finish your day peacefully with this yoga class for all practice levels–modifications will be given for beginners and more advanced practitioner. This class incorporates a flowing
vinyasa style yoga practice, breathing and meditation. Our focus will be on growing more flexible in mind and body, getting stronger, building focus, practicing compassion
and having fun. This 75 minute class will make your entire week better.

Intermediate Yoga (with Pam Glen)
This is a mixed-level class designed for people with some previous yoga experience. We will have a different anatomical focus each week, with a strong emphasis on alignment.
Sometimes this will be done within a framework of vinyasa, and sometimes the postures will be explored individually, This class is based on Iyengar’s teachings.
Beginners Pilates (with Morgan Sanders-Jackson)

This is a beginner’s class – perfect for the student who is new to Pilates and wants to find out more about it.

Core Strengthening & Lower Back (with Laura Lea Sweney)
Classical core class – focuses on proper spine alignment, core & lower back strengthening and proper movement within the exercises. All levels welcome.
Tai Chi/ChiQuong (with Rita Schilling)
TaiChi/ChiQuong is often described as “meditation in motion” because it promotes non-competitive, gentle flowing physical movements. You will perform a series of
postures or movements in a slow, graceful manner. Each posture flows into the next without pause.
Soulful Breathwork (with Lynn Tisza)
This practice is a powerful and graceful process of breathing that brings awareness to our soul’s deepest desires and the healing forces of love. This is healing work. You may
experience a feeling of complete rest, and/or a feeling of being re-energized. You may notice a routine thought may give way to new inspiration, a healing from a past event or
situation can take place, or you may uncover a new perspective.
Yin Yoga (with Holly Lewis)
Yin yoga is a quite, gentle practice that allows us surrender, slow down and come back to balance. Focusing more on our connective tissues, the Yin practice is mostly gentle
seated poses held for one to three minutes at a time. There is a focus on the breath, being present in the moment, relieving tension and letting go. Yin yoga class is
wonderful for stress relief and a great counter balance to more active styles of yoga.

Yoga for extra/Ordinary Guys (with Gaynell Colllier-Magar)
This will be a fun, light-hearted class geared to a beginner level with modifications of postures to make them accessible to all. The class will be at a calm, slow pace with
down-to-earth precise instruction and individual attention given to proper alignment and breathing.

Yoga for extra/ORDINARY GUYS

Guest Blog today from Irvington Wellness Center, yoga teacher -

Gaynell Collier-Magar

We started to call this class ‘Yoga for Ordinary Guys’, but a friend of ours said he would only come to a class for extraordinary guys…..so we’re calling him on it!  John, you better be there…..

Yoga is a way for all of us to realize the extraordinary within ourselves and let go of our self-imposed limitations.  Men often believe yoga is for thin, flexible 20-something women and not for guys.  Actually the first yogis were all guys!

Yoga is for everybody.  Modern-day men can derive enormous benefit from yoga in terms of strength, flexibility, stress relief and relief from chronic injury.  Examples of  men who can benefit from yoga are those make a living doing manual labor (construction, landscaping etc.), men who are  endurance athletes of any kind (running, biking, etc.), do weight training  or engage in other forms of strenuous repetitive motion exercise.

On the other end of the spectrum, guys who are more sedentary, work high-stress desk jobs, are aging, have chronic conditions resulting from physical injury, are very inflexible or are generally out of shape will find real benefit, as well.

The will be a fun, light-hearted class geared to a beginner level, with modifications of postures to make them accessible to all.  The class will be at a calm, slow pace with down-to-earth precise instruction and individual attention given to proper alignment and breathing.

Your instructor will be Gaynell Collier-Magar who has found yoga to be a real lifesaver for her body and mind!  She has run her own landscaping business for 22 years, has been an endurance athlete and powerlifter, scuba dives, and like most of us, has a busy, stressful life.

Come check it out and become a more extraordinary guy!
